XAVI QUESTIONS FIFA ON BALLON  d'Or
Barcelona midfielder Xavi has slammed the decision to exclude Inter star Wesley Sneijder as one of the three finalists for the FIFA Ballon d'Or

The 26-year-old Dutchman was previously considered one of the favourites for the award before the three finalists were announced due to his crucial role in Inter's treble achievement in 2009-10, and leading the Netherlands to the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa.

The Spain international also spoke about the Blaugrana's recent victory over Real Madrid, and their form in the Champions League.

"For me, beating Real Madrid is at the top of my list, as they are one of our biggest rivals," he told Sport.es. "It was a fantastic thing, especially the scoreline.

"A lot of people don't support us for doing so well in both the league and Champions League. They cannot wait to lay the boots into us.

BEST ELEVEN OF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

With 16 teams having booked their places in the knockouts, Goal.com picks out the best performing XI of players from the Champions League group stage...

Best Formation: 4-3-3
Goalkeeper

Manuel Neuer
- Schalke 04

The World Cup goalkeeper may have some flaws positionally, organisationally, and from crosses, but he is surely the best in the world at shot-stopping. The giant German conceded just three goals in six games as Schalke topped Group B.

Defence

Darijo Srna - Shakhtar Donetsk
One of only three players to make it into three Champions League Team's of the Week, Srna was a key player as Shakhtar topped Group H. The Croatian's attacking thrusts from right back make him one of Europe's best full backs.

Nemanja Vidic - Manchester United

Group C winners Man Utd conceded just one goal in six games in the groups, and their leader at the back was Vidic. The Serbian especially was a rock in the two games with Valencia.

Ricardo Carvalho - Real Madrid

Arguably the best defender in the group stages. Real Madrid kept five clean sheets in six games as they topped a tough group also featuring Milan, Ajax and Auxerre.

Michel Bastos - Lyon

Although the Brazilian played on the wing for Lyon, we move him back to his secondary position for our XI. A key reason why the French side qualified for the last 16 as he chipped in with three goals.

Midfield

Michael Essien - Chelsea

A beast in the middle of the park as Chelsea comfortably won Group F. The Blues only started to struggle this season when Essien got injured.
Claudemir - FC Copenhagen
The key influence in midfield as Copenhagen achieved an historic qualification to the knockouts of the Champions League behind Barcelona in Group D. The schemer memorably scored in the home draw with the Catalans.
Gareth Bale - Tottenham Hotspur
Truly announced himself on the European stage with a stunning performance home-and-away against Inter, blasting in a hat-trick at San Siro and running riot against Maicon at White Hart Lane. Scored four goals in the groups from left midfield.

Attack

Lionel Messi - Barcelona

Barcelona's talisman, unsurprisingly, in the groups as the Blaugrana raced into the knockouts by winning Group D. Scored six goals and made others as the little Argentine dazzled.
Mario Gomez  - Bayern Munich

Really struggled last season and scored just once in Bayern'e entire journey to the final, but has found his feet this season. Six goals in the group stages mean that only Eto'o has scored more this term in the Champions League.
Samuel Eto'o - Inter

Top scorer in the group stages with seven goals from six games, all of which were registered in Inter's first four matches in Group A. If it hadn't been for Eto'o's stunning start to the season, the Nerazzurri may now find themselves out of the Champions League and even further away from the Serie A pack.
Line-Up

Neuer

Srna - Vidic - Carvalho - Bastos

   Essien - Claudemir - Bale

Messi - Gomez - Eto'o
